Don't let sleep be a dream anymore: prevent insomnia.

What is insomnia?

Insomnia or insomnia is the most common sleep disorder.
In a nutshell, insomnia means that you do not have a normal sleep rhythm: you wake up too early, you wake up several times a night or you have difficulty falling asleep.

Of course, everyone has trouble sleeping sometimes, and that can't hurt at all. Perhaps it concerns temporary insomnia, caused by working in a shift system or frequently flying to distant destinations.

But with chronic insomnia, sleep problems occur three or more times a week and last for at least three months. This obviously has an effect on your entire body. If you suffer from chronic fatigue it is advisable to contact your GP.

How common is insomnia?

Insomnia is very common, with more than a quarter of adults in Belgium showing signs of insomnia or related sleep problems.

What are the symptoms of insomnia?

  • Decreased concentration;
  • Fatigue throughout the day;
  • Irritability;
  • Emotional lability.

What are common causes of sleep problems?

  • stress and anxiety;
  • depression;
  • use of certain medicines;
  • use of alcohol or caffeine;
  • working in a shift system;

There are also some medical conditions that cause insomnia:

  • respiratory diseases;
  • Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS);
  • neurological disorders;
  • psychiatric disorders.

What can you do about insomnia yourself?

Especially with transient insomnia, you can do a number of things yourself to tackle your insomnia. Here are some tips:

  • Relax daily;
  • Follow sleep training;
  • Do not use alcohol or caffeine;
  • Try to maintain a fixed rhythm in which you sleep and wake up;
  • The light from your smartphone, TV or laptop ensures that you fall asleep less quickly. So stop looking at a screen at least an hour before going to bed;
  • Try not to smoke;;
  • Take a warm bath before going to sleep and let go of all thoughts;
  • It often helps to write down things that bother you elke day;
  • Ensure a clean and fresh bedroom;
  • A lot of light in the room disturbs your night's sleep, so make sure you have a dark room.

What can a doctor do for insomnia?

If the complaints persist and the above tips do not help, it is advisable to visit your GP. There will then be a conversation and possibly some examinations to see where your sleeping problems come from. Sometimes the doctor can prescribe sleeping medication, but this will only be done if there is no other option. First and foremost, sleeping medications have many side effects and do not address the cause of insomnia.

You should therefore view sleep medication as a short-term solution.

Provide the right foundation!

Of course, your bed and mattress also have a huge influence on your sleeping pattern. If your mattress is too hard or too soft, or your bed is uncomfortable, you will sleep poorly either way. So if you suffer from insomnia or other sleeping problems, it is recommended to take a closer look at your bed and mattress: are they really that comfortable? Do you sometimes wake up with a sore back or a sore neck?

Then it is high time to look for a bed and/or mattress that suits you perfectly. Fortunately, we have quality mattresses in all kinds of designs, adapted to every budget. When you view our range, you will undoubtedly find the ideal mattress for you.
